Doctor

Dr. Philip Friel

My professional career has resulted from a long held passion for the study of dentistry and especially cosmetic enhancement work. Having graduated from Glasgow University with degrees in anatomy (1998) and dental surgery (2000), I attained membership to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2004.

In 2009 I was awarded entry without examination to the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow.

Currently working in general, cosmetic and implant dentistry, I am based at Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry, a private referral clinic in Glasgow‘s west end.

I have a special interest in dental implantology combining this with all aspects of grafting and computer technology guided surgery. As a result I was one of the first surgeons to be trained in the Nobel Guide guided surgery technique and the Nobel Active implant.

My strong commitment to continued education means I travel extensively to train with and learn from globally recognised pioneers and experts of advanced cosmetic and implant techniques. Throughout my year I get involved in implant mentoring and I lecture and co-ordinates courses on the placement and restoration of dental implants. I also undertake studies into bone regeneration which is a key part of the implant process.

I’ve visited Sweden, Canada and the USA on visits to expand my knowledge of cosmetic dentistry and particularly implant work..

Actively involved with the UK-wide Association of Dental Implantology (ADI), I was named President-Elect in 2011.

I am a member of a string of key professional organisations including the British and American Academies of Cosmetic Dentistry, the British Dental Association and the International Team for Implantology.

We are pleased that the name we selected for our clinic – Philip Friel Advanced Dentistry at Hyndland Dental Clinic – was approved by the General Dental Council.

Their green light for the name was given because “it clearly indicates the nature of the services to be provided”.

In 2010, the prestigious Dentistry magazine, named me in its list of Top 50 Most Influential Dentists in the UK, specifically citing my work in the field of dental implants.

In October of 2010, I was named as a finalist in the Dentistry Awards 2010 – in the category of Best Young Dentist. Two months later in a glittering awards ceremony in Leicester I was named “Best Young Dentist of the Year” for Scotland.

I am registered with the General Dental Council and my registration number is 77637.

Can you give me some insight as to my dental problem?

Infection – I have been treated for a long period of time.

I had a root canal in a tooth (2 to the last upper left), then Dr. said it if infected again needs 2nd RC. About 2 months later infected again. Dr said have to pull it. With in 2 months the tooth behind it is infected (even thought at the time on the 2nd RC of the other tooth, Dr said that tooth is a good tooth.) so i had a RC done on the one behind the pulled tooth. Dr said at time of RC that it has 3 roots and one is alive and the other 2 are calcified. That the tooth was like this for some time, and it was trying to heal it self. NOW it has an infection 1 month later?????

    What is going on?

The infection follows the same pattern, to my ear (pain) to my head (like my brain is infected) to my thyroid it go hyper with many issues. When given an amoxicillin 500 the hyper goes away with in a few days the ear and head pain leaves. My blood has been monitor as this problem has been happening. Blood shows high thyroid when problems occur and show number down when on amoxicillin 500
